The Mount Isa Mines Rodeo will be back live in the stunning red dirt of Buchanan Park Arena this August, leading the return of major events being staged in the Queensland Outback.

Legendary Australian entertainers Guy Sebastian and Lee Kernaghan will head the entertainment lineup for the largest rodeo in the southern hemisphere being held 12 to 15 August, following a virtual event in 2020.

Isa Rodeo Chief Executive Officer Ms Natalie Flecker tonight announced the long-awaited news tickets would go on sale tomorrow (Wednesday, May 12) at 9am via

“We have really been heartened by the passion and enthusiasm of our rodeo fans who have been so keen to return to watching the live event and enjoy all the entertainment and Outback hospitality it delivers,” said Ms Flecker. “Our focus has again been on creating a spectacular event which will be safe for our competitors and visitors.”

She said the Isa Rodeo was continuing to innovate by introducing new charter flight-glamping packages from Brisbane and adding an exciting new barbecue food experience featuring the “Shank Brothers” to its entertainment program.

Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the population of Mount Isa would more than double for Outback Queensland’s biggest event.

“Jeans, boots and wide brimmed hats are a must for the iconic Mount Isa Mines Rodeo,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“Now in its 62nd year, the Isa’s world-famous rodeo has grown to become the biggest in the southern hemisphere.

“This Outback Queensland destination event brings cowboys and cowgirls from across Australia to the world’s largest city, swelling the town’s population.

“Mount Isa’s rodeo is proudly supported by the Palaszczuk Government because we know major events like this support local jobs and deliver on our economic recovery plan.

“We expect the Mount Isa Mines Rodeo to contribute around $10 million to Mount Isa’s tourist economy and encourage visitors to spend longer in Outback Queensland.

“The Mount Isa Mines Mines Rodeo is a good example of an event that’s been champing-at-the-bit to not only recover from the global pandemic, but rebuild better to reflect changing domestic visitor expectations and be ready for the return of international tourists.

“If you’ve never witnessed the real-life thrills and spills of a rodeo before, Mount Isa is the perfect destination to polish your boots and dust off your hat for a genuine outback rodeo experience.”

General Manager Health, Safety, Environment & Community for Glencore’s Queensland Metals, Ms Maryann Wipaki said Mount Isa Mines was proud to support its namesake rodeo, now in its 62nd year.

“Mount Isa Mines and the Isa Rodeo together have formed a legendary partnership since 1959, and we’re standing alongside the Isa Rodeo to bring you the 2021 Mount Isa Mines Rodeo again this year.

“We are excited to see it back in the arena this year, providing entertainment for our community, and generating around $10 million into the local economy,” said Ms Wipaki.

Ms Flecker said the nation’s top cowboys and cowgirls would compete in eight rodeo events – bull riding, saddlebronc, bareback, ladies barrel race, team roping, rope and tie, steer wrestling and breakaway roping. Nightly concerts will feature Australian entertainment legends Guy Sebastian and Lee Kernaghan, supported by Casey Barnes and Mick Lindsay, along with a free rodeo street festival presented by the Mount Isa City Council; Mailman Express horse races, bush poetry breakfast and a special appearance by the “Shank Brothers”.
