Saddle up for Australia's most famous rodeo

The largest rodeo event in the Southern Hemisphere, the 2009 Xstrata Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo returns for its 51st year culminating in three days of thrilling bronc and bull arena action from August 7 to 9.

During rodeo week which kicks off Wednesday, August 5, Mount Isa’s 20,000-strong population almost triples with travellers from around Australia and overseas heading to the Isa to witness the adrenalin-pumping thrills and entertainment of one of the world’s best rodeos.

So special in fact, it’s just been named an official Queensland Icon – in a list of Q150 icons released by the Queensland Government.

Local, interstate and international competitors will compete for a prize pool of more than $200,000 in the Kalkadoon Stadium at the purpose-built Buchanan Park complex in events including saddle bronc riding, bareback bronc riding, bull riding, rope & tie, steer wrestling and team roping. Other events include wild horse racing, ladies barrel racing and ladies breakaway roping and junior events.

Away from the ring the fun continues with social events including Mardi Gras, Rodeo Queen Quest and Bull Pit. The entertainment line-up includes internationally-acclaimed rock band Hoodoo Gurus and country music star Beccy Cole.

Competitor entries close late July but tickets to the event are now on sale. Prices start at $30 per day for adults, $15 pensioners and $10 for children between 7 – 17 years. Family and multi-day passes are also available and offer savings of up to 20 percent.

Mount Isa is located in north-west Queensland, 900km inland from Townsville along the Overlander’s Way. It is also easily accessed by direct flights from Brisbane, Townsville and Cairns. Come earlier or stay after the rodeo and explore the city some more. Include a visit to Outback at Isa where you can check out the Riversleigh Fossil Centre and see first hand the workings of an underground mine with the ‘Hard Times Mine tour’. Visit beautiful Lake Moondarra and take a dirve or a tour to see the region’s twin jewels, Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park and the fascinating Riversleigh Fossil Fields.
