The Mount Isa Mines Rodeo wraps up its 60th anniversary today with an International Challenge which saw the North American competitors win every event against the Australian champions except the bull ride.
Australian 2018 PBR Champion 21 year old Claremont, Queensland rider Aaron Kleier won the only event for the Aussies, straight after breaking the arena record in the Open Bull Ride with an 89 point ride onboard Slammin’ Jam.
“It’s my first year at the Isa Rodeo and I’ve always wanted to compete here,” said Aaron. With father, Fred a stock contractor, he says he gets on as many bulls as he can in the practice pen at the family’s 56,000 acre Central Queensland property.
It was a spectacular finale after nail-biting Finals action watched by thousands of rodeo-goers before John Farnham brings `The Voice’ to the famous red dirt arena at Buchanan Park Events Complex, along with Busby Marou, Brad Cox, Blake O’Connor and Dee Jaye Bux.
Isa Rodeo Chief Executive Officer Ms Natalie Flecker said the International Challenge, sponsored by the rodeo’s longtime naming rights sponsor, Mount Isa Mines for the past two years had added a new element to the event’s competition.
“Both the North American and Australian teams were incredible to watch but our international competitors were too strong for our homegrown heroes this year,” she said. “It’s been a huge four days and we hope all our visitors, competitors, volunteers and locals will remember the year we celebrated 60 years of Isa Rodeos.”
Ms Flecker said the North American team won seven events – saddlebronc (Rhett Fitzpatrick), bareback (Jessy Davis), ladies barrel race (Katy Mote), team roping (Joe Maddern and Cody McCluskey), rope and tie (Dillon Wickum), steer wrestling (Stockton Grave) and breakaway roping (Shelby Boisjoli) with the 2018 Australian PBR Champion Aaron Kleirer winning the bull ride for the Aussies.
Stockton Graves is a Professional Rodeo Circuit of America (PRCA) noted steer wrestler who is a six time NFR qualifier and 2011 champion steer wrestler at RODEOHouston – one of the biggest rodeos in the world. Saddle Bronc competitor Rhett Fitzpatrick is a Canadian Cowboys Association Saddle Bronc Champion (2014), while bareback rider Jessy Davis finished 18th in the final PRCA world standings and is a seven time NFR qualifier.
The next Mount Isa Mines Rodeo will be held on the second weekend of August, 2020.
The event is supported by the Queensland Government, via Tourism and Events Queensland, and features on the It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar.
