The 2015 Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo roped in more visitors and expenditure, according to a newly released tourism value report.
According to Isa Rodeo Manager Ms Natalie Flecker, the report showed some strong results in key performance areas in comparison to a previous report from the 2013 event.
The 2015 event provided a boost to local business with visitor nights reaching 48,195, up from 46,853 in 2013.
The rodeo also proved to be a drawcard for visitors outside of the region with Mt Isa welcoming 4,957 at this year’s event, a 20 per cent increase from 2013.
Total direct and incremental spending increased by a healthy 25 per cent, representing a $1.57 million increase on 2013 to $5.2 million in 2015.
Ms Flecker said one in five visitors to the rodeo were from Queensland, one in nine were from interstate and the remainder were from within the region. International visitors account for one per cent of the market, with the overwhelming majority from Europe.
“It’s encouraging our intrastate and interstate visitors are up 21 per cent from 2013 and our local visitors have increased by nine per cent,” she said.
“In challenging economic times, we are very proud of these results and I would like to thank our naming right sponsor, Mount Isa Mines; our sponsors and loyal supporters for everything they have contributed towards the event’s success,” she said. “We could not do it without you and thank you so much for your very valued support.
“Our focus is already on next year’s rodeo – how to make it an even better experience for our locals, our visitors and competitors,” said Ms Flecker.
The rodeo has won more than a dozen awards in recent years, including finalist in the Festivals and Events category at the 2013 Australian Tourism Awards. The 2016 rodeo will be held from 12 to 14 August, 2016.
The Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo is supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland and promoted as part of the It’s Live! in Queensland event calendar.
