Largest rodeo in the southern hemisphere bucks underway

The largest and richest rodeo in the southern hemisphere is underway with Outback Queensland’s Mount Isa hosting a spectacular three day showcase of the best of Australian rodeo competition.

Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo Manager Ms Natalie Flecker said rodeo crowds were in for a big weekend of world-class rodeo competition at the 56th annual Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo.

With a swag city set up within the grounds, and hundreds of rodeo-goers pouring through the gates at the purpose-built Buchanan Park event complex, Ms Flecker said Mount Isa was ready to stage one of the most spectacular outdoor rodeos in the world.

“Mount Isa has rodeo fever this week and it’s exciting to see this massive rodeo now underway after months of preparations,” said Ms Flecker. “People always comment on the atmosphere during rodeo weekend in the Isa – the whole city is just buzzing, whether you are at the arena or walking around.”

Australian Professional Rodeo Association (APRA) rodeo administrator Larry Cann said conditions were perfect for this weekend’s competition.

“We have the cream of the crop in professional rodeo competitors was in Mount Isa here, along with bucking bulls and broncs that will really test their skills,” said Mr Cann. “It is fantastic to see nominations are up on last year and arena conditions are perfect.”

Mr Cann said the Isa rodeo was the one all the cowboys and cowgirls wanted to win. “If you win at Mount Isa, you take a big leap forward to qualifying for the national finals,” he said.

Ms Flecker said the Isa Rodeo offered the perfect combination of a world-class rodeo with the real Outback Australian experience.

“When people come to Mount Isa they know they will see the best rodeo competitors in the country, and this year we have but we also believe the entertainment on offer outside the arena is just as important,” she said.

“After the rodeo competition finishes each day, we’ve got fantastic live entertainment every night including the big family Friday night mardi gras, The McClymonts performing Saturday night, a four hour concert tonight featuring the best up and coming young artists from around the country, Fred Brophy’s outback boxing troupe and even a special children’s area,” she said.

The Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo won the Festival & Events category of the prestigious 2013 Queensland Tourism Awards and was a finalist at the Australian Tourism Awards for the second consecutive year.
