The Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo has again won the Gold Award for best Festivals and Events at the recent 2018 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards held in Launceston
Isa Rodeo Chief Executive Officer Ms Natalie Flecker said it was overwhelming for the event to be recognised on the national stage for the third consecutive year and its second gold award in three years.
“We are extremely proud to again represent Queensland in the Festivals and Events category, winning Gold at the 2016, Silver in 2017 and now Gold again at the 2018 awards,” said Ms Flecker.
“It was a huge night for Queensland with Toowoomba’s Carnival of Flowers winning gold for Major Festival and Event and the Irwin Family awarded Australian Tourism Legends among the Queensland winners.
“These awards recognise the pinnacle of tourism operators in the country and for our event, this is due to the valued contribution and support of many hundreds of people, not least our incredible sponsors, volunteers, Rotarians, event team, our Board and committee, competitors and of course, rodeo fans.”
Maryann Wipaki, General Manager of Health, Safety, Environment and Community for Mount Isa Mines said the company has been a major sponsor since the first rodeo in 1959, which is a sign of its ongoing commitment to Mount Isa and this annual premier event.
“The rodeo is a key event on the north west Queensland calendar and has grown to become the largest rodeo in the southern hemisphere. We’re proud to be the naming rights sponsor and congratulate the whole team for another award, acknowledging the success of this iconic event and the benefits it brings to the region,” said Ms Wipaki.
WA’s CinefestOZ was awarded Silver in the Festivals and Events category and NSW’s Parkes Elvis Festival won Bronze when the winners were announced across 25 categories at the awards presentation dinner at Launceston’s Cataract Gorge in Tasmania on Friday night (March 1).
The awards draw together more than 800 tourism business representatives from across the country along with Federal and State Tourism Ministers, CEOs of State and Regional tourism bodies and tourism industry leaders.
The 2019 Mount Isa Mines Rodeo will be held from August 8 to 11, with preparations already well underway, including the Rodeo Queen Quest whose entrants have raised much needed funds for local charities as diverse as the Royal Flying Doctors Service, the Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC), North Queensland Rescue Helicopter Service, the Laura Johnson Home and BUSHkids community health organisation.
The Mount Isa Mines Rodeo is supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland and promoted as part of the It’s Live! in Queensland event calendar.
