The Mount Isa Mines Rodeo has donated a record $235,000 to local community organisations and towards establishing a Hall of Fame from the 2018 event.
Isa Rodeo Chief Executive Ms Natalie Flecker said donations from last year’s rodeo included $85,000 to local community groups, $20,000 to the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), $20,000 to the North West Hospital and Health Service and $50,000 to the Rotary Clubs of Mount Isa.
“The Mount Isa Rodeo Inc (MIRI) also took the lead in donating $60,000 and achieving additional $200,000 sponsorship from the Australian Government and naming rights sponsor Mount Isa Mines to establish a permanent Isa Rodeo Hall of Fame as a tourism attraction for the city and a lasting legacy of the 60th Diamond Jubilee event,” she said.
Ms Flecker also acknowledged the Mount Isa City Council’s support and contribution of providing a venue for the Hall of Fame within its award-winning Outback at Isa complex.
“We are absolutely delighted and proud to return these funds to our local community and a help establish a lasting tribute to the many incredible people who have contributed to the Isa Rodeo over many years, in the form of the Hall of Fame,” said Ms Flecker. “These donations are from the one event and we are absolutely committed to giving back to our community.
“The $85,000 paid to a whole range of community groups will boost their budgets while the Rotary donation will be used in a variety of Rotary projects throughout the community.
“We are very grateful for the support, passion and sheer hard work that many from our community put into the Isa Rodeo year after year. Thank you to each and every supporter. There are plenty of opportunities for the community to be involved in our event, please contact our office if you are interested.”
Ms Flecker said the record donations were in addition to the $11 million the event directly contributed to the local economy in 2018.
“I don’t know of any event that donates this amount back to its local community, and this latest donation takes the rodeo’s community donations to almost $5 million since 1959. It’s a credit to everyone involved – organising committees, our valued sponsors, and of course our wonderful volunteers and rodeo competitors and fans who attend the event year after year,” she said.
