A new chapter was written today on the final day of the 60th Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo.
The legendary rodeo attracted its biggest crowds and competitor numbers since the legendary rodeo moved from Kalkadoon arena to its world-class Buchanan Park in 2007.
For the first time, the event hosted a full team of USA Rodeo Champions who took on the just minted 2018 Isa Rodeo Champions in all eight rodeo events, with a four all draw thrilling the thousands of cheering rodeo fans.
More than 750 competitors – a huge increase from last year’s 600 – tested their skills on the famous red dirt arena, one of the best outdoor rodeo arenas in the worldwide.
The 60th birthday will well and truly be celebrated tonight with a huge concert inside the arena headlined by Aussie rock legend Jimmy Barnes with The Wolfe Brothers, James Blundell, Tania Kernaghan, Brewn and fireworks finale.
In the feel good story of the day, popular Sarina cowboy Roy Dunn, 29, won his second Isa Rodeo Open Bull Ride buckle onboard Blossom for an aggregate 166 points, exactly 27 years after his uncle, the legendary Troy Dunn (still the only Australian to win an American Professional Bull Riding Champion of the Year) achieved the same feat.
“Just to hear the roar of the Mount Isa crowd is unbelievable,” said Roy. “I can’t wait to come back here next year.”
The 2018 champions are Dave Worsfold (Open Bareback), Team Roping (Campbell Hodshon (header) and Liam Davidson (heeler); Cherie O’Donoghue (Breakaway Roping)l, Wendy Caban (Ladies Barrel Race), Heath Nichols (Steer Wrestling), Carl Green (Open Saddlebronc)Mitch eastwell (Rope and Tie), Time Tate (2nd Divi Bull Ride), Ross Dowling (2nd Divi Bareback), Ty Thompson (Junior Steer Ride), Kelsey Lenton (Junior Barrel Race), Maddie Lvett (Junior Breakaway), Joe Down (Junior Bull Ride), Joebie McPhee and Jack Winsper (Junior Team Roping).
Isa Rodeo General Manager Ms Natalie Flecker said it was a huge thrill to see massive crowds, the first International Challenge (Team USA v Isa Champions) and the biggest number of competitors in years come together for the 60th rodeo.
“The atmosphere has been incredible, our camping area inside the race track was completely full and we know our attendance figures on Friday were up 30 per cent,” she said. “I would just like to sincerely thank the thousands of people who made the trip here, our incredible sponsors including Mount Isa Mines who have been with us since the start, more than 700 volunteers who help us put the event on, our rodeo team, amazing competitors and stock, who all create this very special Outback Queensland event. We have also opened a permanent legacy to the event, an Isa Rodeo Hall of Fame at Outback at Isa.”
The 2019 Mount Isa Mines Rodeo will be held from 9 to 11 August, 2019.
The Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo is supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland and promoted as part of the It’s Live! in Queensland event calendar.
