LEGENDARY SINCE 1959

Xstrata Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo wins prestigious Queensland Tourism Award

The 2012 Xstrata Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo has won the Festivals and Events category at the prestigious Queensland Tourism Awards.

The award was accepted by the rodeo’s manager Ms Donna Kuskopf and administration assistant Sharon Wilkinson at a black tie ceremony held at the Brisbane Convention & Entertainment Centre last Friday night. The finalists included the Cairns Airport Adventure Festival, the Abbey Medieval Festival and Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival.

The rodeo, which is the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, was a finalist in the same category last year.

Accepting the award, Ms Kuskopf paid tribute to the event’s naming sponsor, Xstrata, other sponsors, the Board, Rotary Clubs, the local community and more than 670 volunteers for their valued contribution to the rodeo’s ongoing success.

“Without this vital support, we would not be able to stage an event of this size and stature so successfully in a remote location,” Ms Kuskopf said. “A massive amount of work is put in by hundreds of people behind the scenes plus we are indebted to the loyalty and support our sponsors have shown, often over many years.”

The Xstrata Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo is no stranger to awards, having won around a dozen in recent year. The 2009 event was voted 13th in the Events and Festivals category of Queensland’s favourite Q150 awards, as well as scooping three tourism awards to become a finalist in the Festivals and Events category at the 2007 Australian Tourism Awards.

Ms Kuskopf today also congratulated the other winners and finalists in the 2012 QTA, including Outback Queensland Tourism Association (OQTA) which won The Richard Power Award for Tourism Marketing for the Outback Queensland Travellers’ Guide 2012 and Longreach-based Kinnon & Co which won the  Heritage and Cultural Tourism category.

The first Mount Isa rodeo held in 1959 attracted more than 3,000 people including 120 nominations competing for 500 pounds. This year’s event, now in its 54th year, attracted 600 nominations competing for $200,000 in prizes of cash and buckles and around 20,000 people attended the three-day event.

The rodeo will now contest the 2012 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards, being held in Hobart on February 15, 2013.
