Brisbane might have the Ekka, but thousands of people have streamed through the gates this weekend to watch the biggest show in Outback Australia, the Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo.
The famous Isa Rodeo, which will next year celebrate its Diamond Jubilee 60th Anniversary Rodeo, is a heady mix of horsepower, bovine superstars and the best cowboys and cowgirls from all over Australia and overseas.
Isa Rodeo Manager Ms Natalie Flecker said “Combined numbers set a new record for Friday and Saturday. We’ll crunch the final numbers once we have today’s figures” she said. ” We have seen in three day passes becoming more popular, which means visitors are staying longer at the event.”
Two new novelty events had the Friday night crowd roaring with laughter – the Super Hero Bronc Ride and Op shop Barrel Race.
Cowboys swapped western shirts and jeans to saddle up as Super Heroes, with Flash Gordon (Warwick cowboy Lane Grayson) triumphing over Buzz Light Year, Spiderman and some surprises including a kangaroo and “Pauline Hanson” – please explain!
Winner of the inaugural trophy and $500 cash, Lane Grayson said he had only previously seen a novelty saddlebronc ride on YouTube.
“It was just fun to get in costume and making the crowd laugh and having a good time doing it,” he said.
The second new event, the Op Shop Barrel Race saw the country’s best barrel racers dressed in their second hand best as a bride, Mexican signoras and in their pyjamas. Christie Jasperson won the inaugural trophy with Katie Boland scoring crowd cheers for transforming her grey gelding into a zebra.
Arena Director Mr Steve Hilton said the open bull ride was proving as spectacular as predicted, with Kimberley WA cowboy Sally Malay scoring an 84 point ride.
Today will see Finals decided as the giant rodeo wraps up at 5pm tonight, with the champions in all the rodeo disciplines being presented with the coveted Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo belt buckle in addition to their prize money.
The Mount Isa Mines Rotary Diamond Jubilee 60th Anniversary Rodeo will be held over four days from 9 to 12 August, 2018.
The Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo is supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland and promoted as part of the It’s Live! in Queensland event calendar.
