One of America’s favourite rodeo clowns, “Rockin’ Robbie” Hodges will be a special guest at next month’s Xstrata Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo.
One of the busiest clowns on the US rodeo circuit, “Rockin’ Robbie” has performed at 50 rodeos every year for the past 14 years.
After only five years as a rodeo clown, “Rockin’ Robbie” was awarded the coveted 2010 Barrelman award at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) held in Las Vegas. The NFR barrelman is voted in by all eligible announcers and bullfighters who have participated in at least eight PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association)-approved rodeos with the minimum of 20 total performances.
The 44-year-old said performing in front of thousands of spectators had given him confidence after being bullied as a child.
“It really has changed my life,” he said. “All I’ve got to do is make people laugh. It really is the best job in the world.”
Xstrata Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo Manager Tricia Esdaile said it was a coup to attract a performer of Robbie’s calibre.
“He’s regarded as one of the most talented clowns in rodeo worldwide,” said Ms Esdaile.
“It’s the first time we’ve had an international clown in the Mount Isa arena and while we have a proud tradition of supporting Australian talent, I recognise we need to shake it up occasionally.
“We’re always looking to give our crowd a surprise and something different each year – so people keep coming back to Australia’s favourite rodeo.”
“Rockin’ Robbie’s quick wit and off-the-cuff banter will no doubt keep the crowd entertained. “I like to entertain and talk to people,” he said. “I am really looking forward to coming to Mount Isa and Australia.”
Mount Isa is gearing up for its annual rodeo, the largest in the southern hemisphere, being held from Friday to Sunday, August 10 to 12. With $200,000 in prize money and buckles, the rodeo attracts the stars of the Australian rodeo circuit – both competitors and stock.
Highlights of this year’s rodeo include three days of world-class arena action, plus entertainment headlined by Busby Marou, country singer Shea Fisher, Fred Brophy’s Outback boxing troupe, a Friday night mardi gras parade, a race meeting and bush poet breakfasts.
