Outback Australia is preparing to welcome eight time world Bronc Riding champion Dan Mortensen as a competitor in the Southern Hemisphere’s largest and richest rodeo event, the 2007 Xstrata Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo.
The annual rodeo event which draws over 25,000 visitors to the mining town will play host to Dan Mortensen, a fifth generation Montana cowboy between August 9th – 12th as he competes for Down Under glory. His qualifications and achievements have made him a legend in the sport, from the Calgary Stampede (Canada) through to the Copenhagen Cup Finale (Dallas) and all in between, Mortensen has conquered many a bronc, bull or goat that he has been challenged to ride, rope or tame.
Having joined the Professional Rodeo Cowboy’s Association in 1990, Mortensen was named the Saddle Bronc Rookie of the Year. Kicking off his career, he placed in the top 15 during his first year as a pro, qualifying for the National Finals Rodeo. Over his career, rodeo hero Mortensen has won the Bronc Riding event five times and has won in every major rodeo in the world at least one time.
In order to qualify for the all-around championship a competitor must compete successfully in more than one event, to accomplish that goal Mortensen rode bulls in several rodeos. He also won saddle bronc titles in 1993, 1994, 1995 and also won the saddle bronc competition again in 1997 and 1998. At the National Finals Rodeo competition in 2002, during the finals Mortensen made one of the best rides in the history of the Wrangler NFR Saddle Bronc Riding Competition by earning a record 92 points on a horse called Painted Smile Dip.
Whilst Dan Mortensen has proven he is one of the toughest cowboys in the business, he is also one of the richest having become the first roughstock cowboy in PRCA history to go over the $US2 million mark in career earnings in 2003. Now Mortensen is hoping to extend his career highlights further at the 2007 Xstrata Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo.
The accomplished rider and rodeo legend has organisers of the Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo chuffed that their event has drawn competitors of Mortensen’s world standing and calibre. “The Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo has grown substantially in reputation and now sits on the international rodeo calendar as a “must-do” for competitors from all around the world, the attendance of these world class athletes’ further cements the Isa Rodeo in the professional rodeo circuit” said Mrs Joyce McCulloch, Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo General Manager.
The largest rodeo event in the Southern Hemisphere, the 2007 Xstrata Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo will run from Friday 10th to Sunday 12th August 2007. With a record bounty on offer to competitors, the event is preparing for what will be its biggest year.
