The 2007 Xstrata Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo began last night (8th August) with the first round of the official qualifying events that brought over 2,500 spectators out to the new Buchanan Park complex to take in the excitement of rodeo fever.
Last night’s and Friday Night’s Bull Pit events are classified as Round One for the Open Bull Ride and Open Bareback events, competitors are required to qualify in this round to move onto the second round and then to the finals. A total of 48 competitors competed in the Open Bull Ride and 10 competitors fought it out in the Bareback Bronc event.
The action in the Buchanan Park arena proved entertaining for all spectators with plenty of thrills, spills, lasting rides and crows pleasing humour from the ever popular rodeo clowns. Competitors ranged from world champions, local heroes and novices keen to try their luck. The top scoring competitors from Wednesday night’s competition were:
Chris McPhee with 87 points
Grant Wells with 84 points
Clayton O’Brien with 83 points.
Victor McDonald with 83 points
Craig Hollanby with 73 points
Bernie Lanigan with 66 points
Friday night will welcome 49 competitors will be competing in the Open Bull Ride with 10 competitors taking on the Bareback Bronc event on Friday Night. Competing on Friday night is former Australian Bull Riding Champions Jason O’Hearn and Mathew Postle.
The competitors will be taking on famous beasts such as “The Matrix” (named 2007 Professional Bull Riders World Cup Bull of the Event) as well as ‘Hard Yards’ and ‘Lethal Injection’.
Major bull riders have descended upon Mount Isa to compete for the $20,000 prize pool and $10,000 bonus for the winner. There is a $10,000 bonus also up for grabs which will be the single highest cheque amount ever presented to a rider/winner in Australia. Round 2 of qualifying events are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday with the finals on Sunday afternoon.
The largest rodeo event in the Southern Hemisphere, the 2007 Xstrata Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo will run from Friday 10th to Sunday 12th August 2007. With a record bounty on offer to competitors, the event is preparing for what will be its biggest year.
