Rodeo brings the Ashton Big Top to town!

Rodeo ticket holders will get to “join the circus” with a free Ashton Circus show and workshop included as part of the entertainment on offer during this year’s Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo.

Isa Rodeo Manager Ms Natalie Flecker said she was thrilled to confirm the Ashton Entertainment circus and performing arts company, operated by three generations of Australia’s most famous circus family, would perform free shows and circus workshops at the rodeo.

“There will be up to four shows per day over the rodeo weekend plus circus workshops where all ages are welcome to come along and learn some circus skills,” said Ms Flecker.

She said the circus shows and workshops would be free to anyone with a rodeo day ticket or three day pass.

Sixth generation Ashton family member, Chantel Ashton-Rodriguez said Ashton Entertainment was excited to be bringing the Big Top back to the Isa for the first time in 30 years.

“The shows will be packed with a wide variety of acts, from rodeo clowns, hula hoops and high balance acts which everyone expects through to our spectacular Russian Silks performance which is very contemporary and dramatic,” said Mrs Ashton-Rodriguez.

Ms Flecker, Chantel and her nephew Remi Ashton-Rodriguez will visit schools in the Mount Isa, Cloncurry and Julia Creek region this week, as well as the Mount Isa Hospital children’s ward and local nursing home to give locals a taste of the popular circus workshops.

Ms Ashton-Rodriguez said the free circus workshops over the rodeo weekend would give rodeo-goers a chance to learn circus skills including walking a tight wire, juggling, hula hoops, Diablo and plate spinning.

“The workshops are fully based on fun, and we encourage everyone to come along and give it a go,” she said. “We don’t get to the Outback very often so we really hope to see as many people as possible at the shows and workshops.”

Ms Flecker said she hoped rodeo-goers would be pleasantly surprised by the inclusion of the free circus shows and workshops in their rodeo ticket or three day pass. “We hope our rodeo-goers will agree it represents great value by including entry to the rodeo, free circus show and circus workshop as well as the nightly live concerts on the big stage,” she said.  “The Isa Rodeo is about value for money and family entertainment, and we are focused on trying to continually improve our event for our visitors and locals alike.”

The 2016 Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo will be held from Friday, August 12 to Sunday, August 14.  There will be two shows and two Ashton Entertainment workshops on Friday (August 12), then four shows and two workshops on both Saturday and Sunday (August 13 and 14).

Ashton Entertainment is a circus and performing arts company born from the family of the world-renowned Ashton Circus. Founded by fifth generation Ashton, Jan Ashton-Rodriguez and her husband, internationally acclaimed former Spanish Circus star, Brasil Rodriguez, this is their extension of the family circus that they were born and bred into. They, together with their daughters, Chantel and Tamara, along with grandson Remi form Ashton Entertainment. The Ashton Circus Family is the oldest circus family in Australia dating to the early 1800s. They have performed before royalty and been celebrated at the International Monte Carlo “Festival of Circus” by Prince Ranier.
