One of two women’s events, Barrel Racing is a fiercely competitive event demanding speed, skill and communication between a rider and her horse.
Competing against the clock, the rider guides her horse around a clover leaf pattern of three 44 gallon (205 litre) drums.
Time penalties are imposed for knocking over a barrel and disqualification for running in an incorrect pattern. However, the cowgirl may hold the barrel from the riding position to prevent herself from falling.
The time is taken with the use of an electric eye to the hundredths of a second.
