The next Hungry Jack’s Isa Rodeo School (“the school of hard knocks”) bucks underway this Thursday, August 6 on the eve of the biggest and richest rodeo in the southern hemisphere.
This is not your average school – the teachers are Australian rodeo champions and the students prepared to “hit the dust” in the classroom (the world-class Buchanan Park arena) after climbing onboard bucking broncs!
On Friday, the 2015 Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo will kick off its three days of world-class rodeo competition in the arena.
You won’t find keener students for this week’s special school that teaches saddle bronc riding and bareback riding as well as for the first time, Pick Up Man skills, according to Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo Manager Ms Natalie Flecker.
“We are very proud and grateful to have Australian rodeo champions who are willing to share their incredible skills and experience with young and upcoming riders,” said Ms Flecker.
Instructors are the current Pro Tour Saddlebronc Champion and 2014 Isa Rodeo Saddlebronc Champion Michael Maher; 2012 and 2013 Australian Bareback Champion Matthew Makinson and APRA Australian Pick Up Man of the Year Lindsay Rosetta.
“We’re expecting a lot of interest in our Pick Up Man School as Lindsay is known as Australia’s leading pick-up man,” she said.
Pick up men are cowboys who work the roughstock events. They manage the horses and bulls and rescue bronc and bareback riders from their horses after they make a ride. They also release the flank strap on horses after their work is done.
Ms Flecker said the rodeo school was an initiative of the Isa Rodeo’s organisers, the Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo Inc (MIRRI) board in partnership with the Australian Professional Rodeo Association (APRA).
“We saw how keen many Outback youths and young adults were to learn rodeo skills but often didn’t have access to facilities, stock or experienced teachers,” she said. “By attending a Hungry Jack’s Isa Rodeo School they can learn a controlled and professional environment and be taught by champions.”
Cost is $250. To register, contact the Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo office on email@example.com or call (07) 4743 2706.
The courses will cover an introduction to rodeo, expected conduct of a rodeo competitor, theory, equipment, bucking chute and correct riding techniques plus animal welfare procedures, safety and dismount techniques.
This year’s Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo will be held from this Friday to Sunday, August 7 to 9.
