LEGENDARY SINCE 1959

New chairman takes rodeo reins

After ten years on the Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo Committee (including two years as Chairman), Alf Horne has decided to hang up his cowboy hat and pass the reins over to Tony Wolfenden.

With one Isa Rodeo under the belt, Tony Wolfenden has willingly taken up the challenge to be Chairman of the Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo and is looking forward to the 50th Rodeo Celebrations in 2008.

“The position of Chairman requires a strong and accessible leader and the committee and I believe that Tony Wolfenden possess these qualities and will also bring to the position his own professional experience,” said Alf Horne.

As a former Chairman of the annual Moranbah Coal and Country Festival, Tony Wolfenden has successfully steered their committee for eight years from 1991 to 1999.  During this period, the highlight was organising the festival’s 25th Anniversary.

“The role of filling Alf Horne’s shoes is certainly a unique challenge and I thank the committee for this opportunity and their support.  The 50th Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo will be even bigger and better next year and I’m sure that the community of Mount Isa and the thousands of visitors will once again fill Buchanan Park,” said Tony Wolfenden, Chairman of Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo.

Despite moving from Mount Isa to the Atherton Tablelands in 2006, Alf Horne and wife Lesley Horne have remained actively involved in the organisation of the Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo and will continue to provide their support for the 50th Rodeo Celebrations in 2008.

“It is with pride and personal satisfaction that my years on the Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo Committee have culminated with the staging of the first Isa Rodeo at Buchanan Park.  I wish Tony every success as the new Chairman and with Tony’s guidance the 2008 Isa Rodeo will be a huge success,” said Alf Horne.

The Isa Rodeo has been organised and presented by the combined Rotary Clubs of Mount Isa for the last 49 years. Born out of desire by a young service club to “think big”, the Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo has generated and donated millions of dollars into the community since its inception.

In 2008, the largest rodeo event in the Southern Hemisphere, will be celebrating its 50th Isa Rodeo from Friday 8th to Sunday 10th August 2008. For further information and photo opportunities please contact the Media Unit at RODEO HQ on 07 4743 2706.
