Mount Isa rodeo sets sights on Australian Tourism Award

The Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo is among the line-up of the nation’s best tourism businesses contesting the 2013 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in Sydney later this week.

Rodeo manager Ms Natalie Flecker said it was the second consecutive year the rodeo had been a finalist at the prestigious national awards. The winners will be announced across 28 categories at the awards presentation dinner being held at Luna Park Sydney on Friday night (February 7).

The rodeo is the Queensland finalist in the Festivals and Events category, this year competing against the Deni Blues and Roots Festival (NSW), Yulara Outback Festival (NT), Cellar Door Wine Fetival (SA), Queenslandtown Heritage and Arts Festival (TAS), 2012 RACV Energy Beakthrough (VIC) and Kings Park Festival (WA).

Ms Flecker said she was proud to represent the rodeo at the awards presentation. “It is very exciting for the rodeo to be recognised on the national stage among the 108 finalists,” Ms Flecker said. “Our event is the result of the support of our naming sponsor, Mount Isa Mines and our other valued sponsors and the local community, plus the hard work of Rotary, the Board and hundreds of volunteers,” she said.

Ms Flecker said the rodeo achieved massive results in 2012, including generating more than $6.3 million in media publicity (with global coverage through a National Geographic series), directly spending more than half a million dollars in the local economy and making an additional economic impact of $2.5 million by attracting thousands of visitors to the event and city.

The 2014 rodeo will be held from August 8 to 10, with preparations already well underway, including the Rodeo Queen Quest whose entrants have raised millions of dollars over its 56 year history for local charities as diverse as the Royal Flying Doctor’s Service, the Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC), North Queensland Rescue Helicopter Service, the Laura Johnson Home and BUSHkids community health organisation.

The rodeo has won more than a dozen awards in recent years. The 2009 event was voted 13th in the Events and Festivals category of Queensland’s favourite Q150 awards, as well as scooping three tourism awards to become a finalist in the Festivals and Events category at the 2007 Australian Tourism Awards, a feat it repeated at the 2012 national awards.
