Popular urban country band, Will Day & the Alibis, Fred Brophy’s iconic Outback boxing troupe, and a Cowboys Corner where you can meet some of the rodeo’s stars are all part of this year’s entertainment-packed Xstrata Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo being held from August 9 to 11.
It will also be the first time local girl and drummer Katarina Genc will play before her home town crowd on stage with Will Day & The Alibis.
Xstrata Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo Manager Donna Kuskopf said she was thrilled to secure Will Day & The Alibis as the rodeo’s Friday night headline act following its success at the 2013 Tamworth Country Music Festival, including winning Best Group in the CCMA National Talent Quest and placing 3rd overall in the 2013 Coca-Cola Battle Of The Bands, a competition featuring more than 30 country artists from around Australia and overseas.
Also taking centre stage will be multi-award-winning Australian country music duo, McAlister Kemp, whose latest album Country Proud has recently won Australian Video of the Year at the national Country Music Awards, as well as a Best New Talent Golden Guitar and Best New Oz Artist award.
And inside the Isa’s Buchanan Park arena, world-class rodeo action is guaranteed at the biggest event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. In the ring, rodeo-goers can see the nation’s best compete over three action-packed days for a $200,000 prize pool in events such as bull riding, saddle bronc and bareback, steer wrestling, roping, ladies barrel racing and breakaway roping.
“The rodeo’s entertainment line-up is a big part of the event’s success,” said Ms Kuskopf. “People really want to know who’s performing. The entertainment generates a buzz via social media on our Facebook and twitter sites. We know people are really looking to rodeos to provide great entertainment as well as the traditional arena competition.”
New this year will be a Cowboys Corner, where rodeo-goers can meet cowboys, the rodeo quest queens and the popular mascot, Chainsaw – named for one of the most famous bulls on the Australian circuit.
Country singers Tom Maxwell, Holly Wilson and the Kelly Llewllyn and Red Handed Band complete the stage program, while sky divers will make a grand entrance into the arena on Sunday.
Other rodeo entertainment includes the iconic Fred Brophy’s Outback Boxing Troupe and the Mailman Express Sprint Horse Race on Thursday, August 8.
The Xstrata Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo won the Festival & Events category of the prestigious 2012 Queensland Tourism Awards and was a finalist at the 2012 Australian Tourism Awards.
Mount Isa is located in north-west Queensland, 900km inland from Townsville along the Overlander’s Way and is easily accessed by direct flights from Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Darwin, Townsville and Cairns, as well as by road and bus.
