Mount Isa Mines ties up its sponsorship of legendary rodeo

Mount Isa Mines has renewed its major sponsorship of the city’s world famous rodeo for the next three years.

Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo Manager Ms Natalie Flecker said she was thrilled to confirm that Mount Isa Mines had once again come onboard as the naming rights and gold level sponsor of the rodeo for another three year period.

“We are so grateful for the level of support Mount Isa Mines provides to the whole community, and through its long term sponsorship of the rodeo, it allows us to move forward with confidence in staging a world-class event,” said Ms Flecker.

“Mount Isa Mines and the rodeo have been linked since our very first rodeo, and their support for our community is invaluable. There’s no doubt that Mount Isa Mine’s long term and loyal support of the rodeo has helped us grow the event to its legendary status today as one of the most spectacular rodeos in the world.”

Mike Westerman, Chief Operating Officer North Queensland, Copper Assets Australia said he was delighted to continue the mine’s long history of support for the iconic event.

“Mount Isa is known for two things around the world, Mount Isa Mines and the Isa Rodeo, so it’s no coincidence that the two are now strongly linked,” he said.

“Mount Isa Mines has been a major sponsor of the Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo for more than 50 years, which is a sign of our support and ongoing commitment to Mount Isa and its annual premiere event.”

Ms Flecker said the story of how Mount Isa Mines and rodeo was intertwined was a fascinating part of Outback Queensland’s history. Mount Isa Mines was established in 1924 and by 1955 had become the largest mining company in Australia. When three local Rotary Clubs joined forces just four years later to create the city’s rodeo – Mount Isa Mines was onboard to support. Today the company employs around one-fifth of Mount Isa’s population.

Ms Flecker said preparations were well underway for the 57th annual Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo, being held from August 7 to 9.

“We are very proud that visitors from all over the world are drawn to Mount Isa for a rodeo like no other,” she said. “The Isa Rodeo is absolutely unique as a not-for-profit event run by Rotarians which has contributed more than $3.8 million back to local charities and community groups since its early beginnings in 1959 – and we could not do it without the support of Mount Isa Mines.”

The rodeo has won more than a dozen awards in recent years, including finalist in the Festivals and Events category at the 2013 Australian Tourism Awards.
