Off the back of record crowd numbers and a coveted win at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards, the Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo is set to be the hottest ticket in North West Queensland again this year.
Minister for Tourism, Major Events and the Commonwealth Games Kate Jones said with tickets for the 2017 Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo set to go on sale in March, it was sure to be another bumper year for the event.
“The Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo is riding high, having just won the Gold award for Festivals and Events at the recent Australian Tourism Awards and recording strong results at the 2016 event,” Ms Jones said.
“Year on year, this iconic Outback Queensland event grows from strength to strength which is great news for the local economy and local jobs.
“A crowd of more than 32,380 attended the rodeo in 2016, up three per cent on the previous year. This is a fantastic result for North West Queensland, with visitors spending just under $13 million during the three-day event.
“Now the largest rodeo in the southern hemisphere, the Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo is a great Queensland events success story, which was elevated to major event status last year by Tourism and Events Queensland.
“The event also contributed an additional $150,000 into the local economy in 2016 with $65,000 paid to local community groups and $85,000 raised through the Mount Isa Rodeo Queen Quest.”
Ms Jones said increased attendance at the rodeo led to an extra 6,225 visitor nights for the region to 54,420, an increase of 13 per cent.
“I’m pleased to say the event is gaining national attention, with one in three visitors at last year’s event coming from interstate,” she said.
“The largest number of interstate attendees came from regional New South Wales, followed by the Northern Rivers (NSW) and then regional Victoria.”
Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo General Manager Natalie Flecker said a visitor survey conducted during the 2016 rodeo found more than 65 per cent of attendees were repeat visitors with 66 per cent having attended five or more rodeos.
“These results are a vote of confidence that the event is growing and improving and giving people a reason to come back year after year,” Ms Flecker said.
“We’re looking forward to building on the foundations of last year’s success with planning well underway for this year’s event and tickets to go on sale in March.”
The next Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo will be held from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 August 2017. Information on ticket sales will be released next month.
