With a job that sends her touring Australia 48 weeks of the year, Mount Isa-born XXXX Angel Kirsty is counting down the days until she returns to her home town next month for the city’s spectacular rodeo.
In the past two years, Kirsty has progressed from fledgling “Angel” to captain of the seven-strong team who will be performing at various venues around Mount Isa from August 12 to 14 during the 53rd annual Xstrata Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo.
“The Mount Isa Rodeo is my absolute favourite event of the year,” says Kirsty, of her job that takes her to Australia’s top sporting events including the V8 Super Car Series, State of Origin, Twenty20 Cricket matches, Australian Grand Prix and Moto GP, horse racing meets and music festivals such as the Tamworth Country Music Festival and Gympie Music Muster.
“Performing in front of my home crowd is very special for me, particularly at the rodeo which I have been to for as long as I can remember! “ she says.
“The girls know (Mount Isa’s) rodeo is coming up soon and remind me of this when I get a little homesick. While back in town I always try to organise something special so that they can experience some of the Outback and Mount Isa.”
Last year, Kirsty’s dad took the XXXX Angels on an underground mine tour and in 2009 her older brother took the girls quad biking during their breaks from rodeo performances.
“The girls have grown up all over Australia, including Cairns, Sydney, Busselton, the Gold Coast and Terrigal but most haven’t explored much of the Outback or been to Mount Isa before,” says Kirsty. “Everyone is very down to earth and loves a new adventure so I am looking forward to showing them why Mount Isa is such a special place and so unique.”
The XXXX Angels are among the rodeo’s most popular entertainment, according to Xstrata Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo Manager Tricia Esdaile.
“This year, XXXX is bringing the XXXX Gold Retreat to the rodeo and the Angels will be performing there – as well as in the arena over the three days of the event,” says Tricia.
As captain of the squad, Kirsty says she is enjoying the extra responsibilities the role brings.
“All of the girls have danced professionally overseas,” she says. “As captain I ensure all the routines are polished, reblock the routines if someone is sick or injured and assign radio and press interviews.”
The Angels are also required to brush up on their knowledge of the sporting events they are attending, according to Kirsty.
“One of the perks of the job, apart from the fantastic opportunity to see Australia, is that we get to interview some of the country’s leading sportspeople,” she says. “ I have been lucky enough to interview Darren Lockyer straight after the State of Origin, Titans Captain Scotty Prince, V8 Supercar legends Jamie Whincup and Greg Murphy, cricket legends Allan Border and Dennis Lillee and Leanne Tander, the only woman in the world to have won a Formula 3 Race.”
Kirsty, who has danced since she was three years old, has completed a Bachelor of Exercise Science at Griffith University and is currently studying a Diploma of Children’s Writing by correspondence.
Prior to becoming XXXX Angels, the talented troupe of dancers has between them performed everywhere from the ARIAs to Tokyo Disneyland, cruise ships around the world and even represented Australia in the International Sports Aerobics and Fitness Championships.
