The Mount Isa Theatrical Society (MITS) will celebrate 60 years of community theatre by sponsoring the Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo’s Friday night Mardi Gras.
Rodeo Manager Ms Natalie Flecker said she was excited to announce MITS would take theming rights’ sponsorship of the rodeo’s family favourite – the Mardi Gras.
“This year’s Mardi Gras theme is “It’s Showtime: The Mount Isa Theatrical Society’s 60th Anniversary,” said Ms Flecker.
“Mount Isa has a rich cultural history, so it is fitting that this year’s Mardi Gras theme celebrates the long history of the Mount Isa Theatrical Society. It’s interesting too how the society has been supported by Mount Isa Mines (MIM), even since its earliest days.
“We are looking forward to seeing how the local businesses, community organisations, schools and clubs who take part in the parade, will embrace the It’s Showtime theme. As everyone knows who’s ever been, the Mardi Gras is the night that sets the festival tone for the rodeo weekend.”
MITS President Ms Jenelle Robartson said the society had humble beginnings, starting as a small group based in a clubhouse owned by MIM.
“During those early couple of decades, we used to perform at different venues and in the early 70s purchased the former grade three classroom of the Mines Side school from MIM for a very nominal fee,” said Ms Robartson. “We’ve gone from strength to strength, doubling in size by adding a stage and storage. We’ve been performing there since 1984.”
Ms Robartson said she hoped participants would interpret the theme in a wide variety of ways. “Our aim is to support other artistic projects in the community,” she said. “I hope other groups involved in culture will use “It’s Showtime” to show what they are doing, in lots of different ways.”
