Once you could win a pony, now the Isa Rodeo’s art union prizes are thousands of dollars worth of Toyota vehicles and travel.
Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo Manager Ms Natalie Flecker said the rodeo’s art union tickets are “the hottest tickets in town” and were now on sale.
She also paid tribute to long term major sponsors Bell & Moir Toyota and third prize sponsor Helloworld. First prize this year is a Toyota Landcruiser LC200 GXL King of the Road, second prize is a Toyota GT 86 and third prize is a $3,000 Helloworld travel voucher.
Long-time art union organiser Peter Baldwin said the rodeo art union had come a long way since it held pony raffles in the 70s.
Mr Baldwin said the North West Star’s archives included a photograph from the 1979 Isa Rodeo, with 10 year old Valerie Prentice on three-year-old Sundown, a chestnut with a silver mane.
“Some parents would be a bit nervous wondering how they would fit a pony in the backyard if they won,” said Peter. “Our story at the time even said worried parents could claim an alternative prize of a deluxe colour television.
“With the long term and loyal support of Bell & Moir we’ve really upped the ante with Toyota vehicle prizes that everyone wants to win. Their support has enabled the rodeo to raise thousands of dollars to benefit the community.”
Lee and Linda Pulman of Bell & Moir Toyota said they were proud to support the Isa Rodeo, Queen Quest Ball and art union for more than three decades.
“Our motto is locals supporting locals,” said Lee. “The rodeo is Mount Isa, and our icon event and a lot of the money it raises gets put straight back into the local community.
“One of the reasons the art union is so popular is your odds are so good with only 2,400 tickets sold.”
Ms Flecker said art union tickets were $100 each. Tickets are available from participating businesses, as well as by calling the rodeo office on 4743 2706 or dropping in. “We are very grateful for the support of our sponsors, which enables us to offer such incredible prizes, and I would also like to thank Peter for his many years of organising the art union.
“Last year, three Mount Isa locals won the prizes, you’ve got to love that!” she said.
The winners will be drawn at Buchanan Park on August 9 at 1.30pm. This year’s Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo will be held from August 7 to 9.
