The Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo is among the line-up of the nation’s best tourism businesses contesting the 2016 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards being held in Darwin on Friday.
Rodeo manager Ms Natalie Flecker said it was the third time the rodeo had been a finalist at the prestigious national awards since 2007.
“We are very proud to represent Queensland in the Festivals and Events category in the most prestigious tourism awards in the country,” said Ms Flecker. “After reaching the finals in 2007 and 2012, we are really hoping three’s a charm for the rodeo.”
The winners will be announced across 25 categories at the awards presentation dinner being held at the Darwin Convention Centre on Friday night (February 24).
The awards draw together more than 800 tourism business representatives from across the country along with Federal and State Tourism Ministers, CEOs of State and Regional tourism bodies and tourism industry leaders.
The rodeo is the Queensland finalist up against the Uluru Camel Cup (NT), Sounds by the River (SA), Queenscliff Music Festival (VIC), Argyle Diamond Valley Muster (WA), The Falls Music & Arts Festival (TAS), National Folk Festival (ACT) and Parkes Elvis Festival (NSW).
Ms Flecker paid tribute to the support of its naming sponsor, Mount Isa Mines and other valued sponsors and the local community, Rotary, the Board and hundreds of volunteers.
The 2017 rodeo will be held from August 11 to 13, with preparations already well underway, including the Rodeo Queen Quest whose entrants have raised millions of dollars for local charities as diverse as the Royal Flying Doctor’s Service, the Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC), North Queensland Rescue Helicopter Service, the Laura Johnson Home and BUSHkids community health organisation.
The Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo is supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland and promoted as part of the It’s Live! in Queensland event calendar.
