GOLD! Isa Rodeo wins Australian Tourism Award

Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo won gold in the Festivals and Events category of the 2016 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards held in Darwin last Friday night (March 24).

It was third time lucky for the rodeo which was Queensland finalist in the same category in 2007 and 2012.

Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo Inc (MIRRI) Chairman Darren Campi, Rodeo Manager Natalie Flecker and committee members and fellow Rotarians Kim Kretschmann, Paul Silva and Peter Gogsch accepted the gold trophy at the prestigious awards ceremony held at the Darwin Convention Centre. The National Folk Festival won silver and Parkes Elvis Festival bronze.

Mr Campi said it was a fantastic coup for the event and city to win the national award.

“I would like to pay tribute and thank all our loyal sponsors, including naming rights sponsor Mount Isa Mines, the MIRRI Board, all the Rotarians and our hundreds of volunteers who work so hard in helping us stage the biggest and best rodeo in the southern hemisphere,” he said.

“This award is recognition of not only the rodeo’s success on the national stage but also the support, dedication and commitment of everyone, particularly our Rotarians who volunteer countless hours to put this event on for the benefit of our local community.”

Mr Campi also thanked the Queensland Government and Tourism and Events Queensland for recently granting the Isa Rodeo major event status.

“We are looking forward to staging another fantastic rodeo in August and to ensuring our event is the one of people’s bucket list so they will make the trip to Mount Isa and north-west Queensland and see what the fuss is about?,” he said.

“It’s really exciting to think that this event was started by Rotary to put our fledgling mining town on the map. This award has been nearly 60 years in the making, so I think we have done it!”

In 2018, the Isa Rodeo will celebrate its diamond anniversary 60th event. This year’s rodeo will be held from August 11 to 13, 2017.
