CELEBRATING 60 YEARS

FOUR TIME WORLD BAREBACK CHAMPION TO LEAD NORTH AMERICAN TEAM IN ISA RODEO’S INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE

Mount Isa Mines Rodeo’s 60th year celebrations will end on a high note with an International Challenge of North American champions taking on the 2019 Aussie champions.

Isa Rodeo Chief Executive Officer Ms Natalie Flecker said the North American team would be led by legendary four time World Bareback Champion Bobby Mote.

“Our longtime naming rights sponsor, Mount Isa Mines is again sponsoring the International Challenge, which will give rodeo fans an incredible opportunity to see American competitors including six time NFR qualifier steer wrestler Stockton Graves in action,” said Ms Flecker. “While Bobby Mote retired in 2017, he is a true legend of the rodeo world and we are looking forward to welcoming him and the whole team to Mount Isa and Outback Queensland.”

Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said visitors attending this year’s rodeo can expect to witness a blockbuster showdown between the two countries as part of the event’s 60 year anniversary celebrations.

“This event continues to position Outback Queensland as the best destination in the Southern Hemisphere to watch rodeo action live, which has grown to attract nearly 40,000 attendees,” said Ms Jones.

General Manager Health, Safety, Environment & Community for Glencore’s North Queensland operations, Ms Maryann Wipaki said last year’s inaugural Mount Isa Mines International Challenge had been such a spectacle that MIM was delighted to again support the International Challenge to mark the 60th anniversary.

“It’s 60 years since the first Mount Isa Mines Rodeo, and we are very proud to have been there as major sponsors since the beginning and long term naming rights sponsors,” said Ms Wipaki. “We’ve invested $30,000 to bring the International Rodeo Team made up of North America’s top cowboys and cowgirls to take on the best of our Australian competitors.

“We know that Mount Isa and our Aussie team will give the North Americans a true taste of the best rodeo action Australia has to offer, which will see them return for future rodeos.”

Ms Flecker said the North American team of cowboys and cowgirls would each compete in one of the eight rodeo events – bull riding, saddlebronc, bareback, ladies barrel race, team roping, rope and tie, steer wrestling and breakaway roping for the International Challenge on Sunday, August 11.

“The Australian champions of each event will compete against their equivalent American champion,” said Ms Flecker.  “It will be an absolutely spectacular way to finish our 60th year anniversary rodeo arena competition before we hold our RODEO ROCK concert in the arena headlined by John Farnham on Sunday night.”

The North American team includes Rhett Fitzpatrick (Saddle Bronc Riding), Stockton Graves (Steer Wrestling), Joe Mattern (Team Roping – Heeler), Katie Mote (Ladies Barrel Racing), Jessy Davis (Bareback Riding), Riley Blankenship (Bull Riding), Trey Johnson (Team Roping – Heeler), Canadian Shelby Boisjoli (Ladies Breakway Roping), Dillon Wickum (Rope and Tie), Cody McCluskey (Team Roping – Header), Bobby Mote and Justin Parrish (Team Roping – Headers). Legendary Canadian rodeo announcer Joe Braniff and popular American rodeo comedy clown, Cliff “Hollywood” Harris will also return for this year’s rodeo.

Stockton Graves is a Professional Rodeo Circuit of America (PRCA) noted steer wrestler who showed early promise by winning the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo in 2006. The six time NFR qualifier was the 2011 champion steer wrestler at the 2011 RODEOHouston – one of the biggest rodeos in the world.

Saddle Bronc competitor Rhett Fitzpatrick is a Canadian Cowboys Association Saddle Bronc Champion (2014), while bareback rider Jessy Davis finished 18th in the final PRCA world standings and is a seven time NFR qualifier.

Ms Flecker said the International Challenge was part of a strategy to target the American market for the event.
