Rising country music stars, talented local entertainers and Fred Brophy’s Outback boxing troupe are all part of the entertainment line-up at this year’s Xstrata Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo being held from August 12 to 14.
And inside the arena at Buchanan Park the world-class rodeo action is guaranteed at the biggest event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.
Outside the arena, Friday night (August 12) will see the popular free Mardi Gras get underway from 5.30pm, with a street parade and side show alley all part of the fun before the focus shifts to the ring for the ceremonial introduction of the cowboys and cowgirls and rodeo events including an International Bull Ride Competition.
This year’s rodeo will also welcome a new event – QR’s spectacular Silver Spike competition featuring the best track-layers from throughout Queensland competing to lay 13 metres of track in the safest and fastest time. The teams lift 3000kg of equipment by hand per race – laying sleepers, the track and nailing in 160 dog spikes before racing pump car along the track to the stop block.
On stage will be rising country music star Mick Lindsay, whose distinctive vocals and high energy guitar skills, are winning him legions of fans. Currently in the USA recording an album, Mick will bring his fresh blend of country rock and pop to the Isa on both days of the rodeo weekend.
Rodeo-goers can also catch talented entertainer Tom Maxwell in concert over the weekend. A finalist in many of Australia’s country music awards including the prestigious Starmaker adn Golden Guitars, Tom was last year inducted into the Hands of Fame Park in Tamworth.
Rounding out the music entertainment are indigenous singer songwriter and recording artist, Viv Edwards plus Big Wheel – one of north Queensland’s premier rock cover bands who will perform hits from the 50s through to current top 40.
In the ring, rodeo-goers can see the nation’s best compete over three action-packed days for a $200,000 prize pool in events such as bull riding, saddle bronc and bareback, steer wrestling, roping, ladies barrel racing and breakaway roping.
Other rodeo entertainment includes the ever popular XXXX Angels, the CrackUp Sisters and Fred Brophy Outback Boxing Troupe as well as the Zonta Bush Poets Breakfast on Wednesday, August 10 and the Mailman Express Spring Horse Race on Thursday, August 11.
