Champions heading to Isa to teach Rodeo School

A four-time Australian Bull Riding Champion and the current national Bullfighting Champion will teach a group of eager students the next Hungry Jack’s Isa Rodeo School on Sunday, June 19.

Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo Manager Ms Natalie Flecker said she was excited to announce the one-day clinic and expected it to sell out quickly, due to the calibre of the instructors.

“We are very proud and grateful to have Australian rodeo champions who are willing to share their incredible skills and experience with young and upcoming riders,” said Ms Flecker.

The bull riding instructor will be four-time Australian Bull Riding Champion, Kyogle-based Dave Kennedy, who recently retired after a stellar career on the PBR tour. Dave also represented Australia in the PBR World Finals and won his fourth national title in 2014.

“We’ll be covering the basics of bull riding as well as the mental side,” said Dave. “It takes a lot of mental strength to win at Mount Isa. Once you step up from steers and junior bulls, you can’t get away with the little mistakes you once could.”

A member of the current Australian Bullfighting Champion team, Mitch Russell, 30, from Maitland, NSW, will share his skills with budding bullfighters.

“I will be helping with reading situations and the best way to help each other, working as a team and also animal welfare,” said Mitch, who breeds rodeo bulls.

Ms Flecker said the Hungry Jack’s Rodeo School was an initiative of the Isa Rodeo’s organisers, the Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo Inc (MIRRI) board in partnership with the Australian Professional Rodeo Association (APRA).

“We saw how keen many Outback youths and young adults were to learn rodeo skills but often didn’t have access to facilities, stock or experienced teachers,” she said. “By attending a Hungry Jack’s Isa Rodeo School they can learn a controlled and professional environment and be taught by champions.

Ms Flecker also paid tribute to sponsors Hungry Jack’s Mount Isa for their valued ongoing support of the school.

Cost is $250, including lunch. To register, contact the Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo office by emailing admin@isarodeo.com.au or call (07) 4743 2706.  Spaces will be strictly limited.

Known as the “School of Hard Knocks”, The Hungry Jack’s Isa Rodeo School is not your average school – the teachers are Australian rodeo champions and the students are prepared to “hit the dust” in the classroom (the world-class Buchanan Park arena) after climbing onboard bucking bulls.

This year’s Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo will be held from Friday to Sunday, August 12 to 14.
