Today marks the beginning of the 2007 Xstrata Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo as the mining town kicks off their countdown celebrations with five days of festivities in place as a prelude to the major rodeo events which commence next Friday (10th August 2007).
The outback Queensland town will welcome an expected 25,000 visitors and competitors over the next few days – the Isa Rodeo is officially the largest and richest rodeo event in the Southern Hemisphere and organisers have worked hard to ensure that the schedule of events doesn’t disappoint.
“We work hard with our committee and the local community to ensure the Isa Rodeo evolves each year. We want to deliver an experience to our visitors that will be unforgettable whilst also demonstrating to our competitors from all around the world the kind of show that Isa can deliver. The Isa Rodeo is an open invitation for all to attend, it’s just one of those things that you have to do”, said Mrs Joyce McCulloch, Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo General Manager.
In the week leading up to the Rodeo, business houses and retail outlets get firmly behind the spirit of the event, with most participating in the annual “Best Dressed Premises” competition, run by the Mount Isa Chamber of Commerce. The object is to have premises and staff dressed in appropriate theme decoration and costume for Rodeo Week.
And the enthusiasm doesn’t stop there. The Rodeo Mardi Gras, traditionally held on the Friday night of Rodeo, involves all sections of the community and is one of the highlights of the weekend. From 5pm Friday, the streets surrounding Buchanan Park are closed and will become a giant fairground, with wall-to-wall people enjoying entertainment, dancing, carnival rides and food.
The full Xstrata Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo experience is made up of numerous activities and events to suit all ages. Although the official rodeo events won’t commence until Friday 10th August, activities on offer in the lead up to the excitement include the Mayoress Ball and Crowning of the Rodeo Queen, Mount Isa Premises Judging as local retail and public spaces get into the spirit and dress to celebrate the Rodeo, the Bull Pitt Challenges – this is man against beast and the outcome is as unpredictable as the beast, Live music from some of Australia’s leading country music artists including The Bostocks, Crakajack and Shandell Tosoni plus plenty of other scheduled social activities.
The largest rodeo event in the Southern Hemisphere, the 2007 Xstrata Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo will run from Friday 10th to Sunday 12th August 2007. With a record bounty on offer to competitors, the event is preparing for what will be its biggest year.
