Queensland’s wildly popular rock duo Busby Marou, rising country music star Shea Fisher and Fred Brophy’s Outback boxing troupe are all part of this year’s entertainment-packed Xstrata Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo being held from August 10 to 12.
And inside the Isa’s Buchanan Park arena, world-class rodeo action is guaranteed at the biggest event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. New this year will be “mini rodeos” – the rodeo equivalent of 20/20 Cricket – with the top competitors putting on a fast-paced showcase of all the standard events on the Friday night, and on Saturday after lunch and at 7.30pm.
Xstrata Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo Manager Tricia Esdaile said there was a real buzz about Busby Marou performing at this year’s event.
“We’ve had a huge response via social media on our Facebook and twitter sites, so we know people are really looking to rodeos to provide great entertainment as well as obviously the traditional events,” said Ms Esdaile.
Hailing from Rockhampton, Busby Marou have just been nominated in this year’s Queensland Music Awards for Most Popular Band and have recorded with, and played support to Pete Murray. In 2010, they won the Indigenous Award at Brisbane’s Q Song Awards and took out a Deadly for Most Promising New Talent in Music.
Also bound to be popular will be US-based country singer songwriter Shea Fisher, who has flown in from Nashville to her home town to perform over rodeo weekend. Mick Lindsay, with his fresh blend of country rock and pop; country singer Don Costa’s chart-topping mix of original and classic cover songs ; and talented indigenous singer songwriter and recording artist Viv Edwards complete the stage programme.
This year’s rodeo will feature a dance floor, plus seating and tables in the entertainment marquee in the rodeo forecourt.
In the ring, rodeo-goers can see the nation’s best compete over three action-packed days for a $200,000 prize pool in events such as bull riding, saddle bronc and bareback, steer wrestling, roping, ladies barrel racing and breakaway roping.
Other rodeo entertainment includes Fred Brophy’s Outback Boxing Troupe, the Mailman Express Spring Horse Race on Thursday, August 9 and Bush Poets’ Breakfasts daily over the weekend from 7am to 9am.
