The biggest rodeo in the southern hemisphere is underway with Outback Queensland’s Mount Isa hosting a spectacular three day showcase of the best of Australian rodeo competition.
Australian Professional Rodeo Association (APRA) General Manager Steve Hilton said rodeo crowds were in for a big weekend of world-class rodeo competition at the Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo.
“All the current Australian champions are here, and the best stock in the country is here to test their skills,” said Mr Hilton. “Nominations are the same as last year, which is very encouraging.
“The Mount Isa Rodeo is one that is always trying to improve its entertainment. You would not find a better venue in this country if you want to watch a rodeo.”
Rodeo Manager Donna Kuskopf said it was exciting to see hundreds of rodeo-goers arriving at the purpose-built Buchanan Park events complex, after months of organisation and preparation.
“When people come to Mount Isa they expect to see the best rodeo competitors in the country, and we also put a strong focus on the entertainment outside the arena,” she said. “This event is a massive production over three days and we believe offers one of the best rodeo experiences in the world.”
Ms Kuskopf said one of the most popular additions in recent years has been a giant replay screen.
“This year we’ve hooked the screen up to the official timer, so rodeo-goers can see exactly how the cowboys and cowgirls are going against the clock,” she said.
“People always comment on the atmosphere during rodeo weekend in the Isa – the whole city is just buzzing, whether you are at the arena or walking around.”
The Xstrata Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo won the Festival & Events category of the prestigious 2012 Queensland Tourism Awards and was a finalist at the Australian Tourism Awards.
